The fourth annual Mathematical Sciences Institute for grades 6-12 mathematics and science educators will be on July 21 - 23, 2008 at St. Martin's Episcopal School, 5309 Airline Blvd, Metairie, 70003. This year's institute will feature extended sessions spread out over the three-day institute in a variety of subjects. Sessions will be offered for both middle and secondary level mathematics and science educators. The institute also affords participants many networking opportunities. Educators will have opportunities to explore the latest educational technology available. Participants can learn more about Geometer's Sketchpad, Cabri Jr , GeoGebra, TI Navigator, Excel, TI-Nspire and a variety of other technology tools. Pre-registration is required. Registration is available through July 10, 2008 via the website http://msi.promotinglearning.com.
Featured speakers will be : Bruce Baguley of Cascade Math Systems, an interactive computer learning tool, Kay Butler of the Pat Taylor Science and Technology Academy, Mark Firmin of Archbishop Rummel High School, Lou Schultz of Southeastern Lousiana University, Jim Marsalis of St. Martins Episcopal, Ira Nirenberg of the University of Chicago Laboratory School, Fan Disher of Mandeville High School, Bill Crombie of Rutgers University, and Andrew Talmadge of the University of New Orleans. In addition, Texas Instruments will offer a T-cubed professional development opportunity for the three-days: Exploring Mathematics with the TI-Nspire. Participants in this session will receive a TI-Nspire and associated computer software for use in their classroom.
Registration and information may be obtained from the website http://msi.promotinglearning.com. Participants will receive a certificate for 18 hours of continuing learning units. Continental breakfast and full lunch will be provided each day. There is a registration fee of $180 for the institute ($355 for the TI-Nspire training) until June 1. Registration for the institute after June 1 is available at $240.
The institutes have been organized by local mathematics and science teachers who have formed a nonprofit organization called Promoting Education for Lifelong Learning, Inc. (PELL, Inc.) to organize their work. Last year's institute had more than 100 educators from as far away as Ghana in West Africa learning and sharing ideas in statistics, biology, chemistry, physics, calculus, technology, and different teaching strategies for math and science.
