Mathematics & Science Institute 2008
July 21-24, 2008
Speakers
- Bruce Baguley
Bruce Baguley works for Cascade Math Systems, LLC. Bruce Baguley received a BA in Mathematics from Tulane University, an MS in Mathematics from MIT, and his teacher training from Heritage College in Toppenish, WA. While teaching elementary and middle school students, he became interested in showing math concepts using manipulatives rather than relying on memorizing formulas. He has given numerous workshops at math conferences over the past few years, showing people how to use manipulatives to represent math concepts from counting, through whole number, rational, and integer operations, to solving and graphing linear equations as well as proving number theory problems. - Kay Butler
Karen (Kay) Butler is a National Board Certified Teacher (Adolescent and Young Adult Mathematics) currently teaching secondary mathematics and pre-engineering courses at Patrick F. Taylor Science & Technology Academy in Jefferson Parish. She also serves as a Content Seminar Leader for The New Teacher Project, an alternative teacher certification program. Her educational interests include geometry, problem-solving, multiple representations, and differentiation, as has been evident in various workshops facilitated by her for local teachers. Kay has earned degrees from Delgado Community College, Nicholls State University, and Louisiana State University. - Bill Crombie
Based in Highland Park, New Jersey, Bill Crombie is a consultant in mathematics and science education. He is presently a fellow at the MetroMath Center for Learning and Teaching at Rutgers University. Since 1990 he has been involved in the development and delivery of training programs for both teachers and trainers in the National Algebra Project and is a Master Trainer for the Algebra Project's Train-the-Trainer Program. In addition he is the principal developer of the Polynomial Calculus Curriculum. Bill holds a BA in both mathematics and physics from Rutgers University and an MA in physics from the State University of New York @ Stony Brook. - Mark Firmin
Mark Firmin has taught math and science at Archbishop Rummel High School for the last fifteen years. He has also trained teachers in the Archdiocesan Schools of New Orleans, Orleans Parish Public Schools, Jefferson Parish Public Schools, and schools in the Recovery School District. Mark also teaches in the Math and Curriculum and Instruction departments at the University Of New Orleans. - Jim Marsalis
Jim Marsalis has been a high school mathematics and science teacher for more than thirty years at St. Martin's Episcopal School in Metairie,LA. He currently teaches calculus and precalculus. Jim was a 1993 Woodrow Wilson fellow for their Mathematics of Change summer program and has done a number of presentations and workshops for math teachers on mathematical modeling and the use of technology in mathematics education. - Ira Nirenberg
Ira Nirenberg taught physics, mathematics, and astronomy at Benjamin Franklin High School in New Orleans, one of the top public schools in the country for twenty years. Currently, he is teaching physics at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools. He has a Masters degree in physics with a strong mathematics background and is a certified regular and gifted teacher in mathematics and physics. He worked six years for Shell Oil Company as an Exploration Geophysicist before being charmed into teaching. During the last seven years he has worked with middle school teachers using materials on fraction mathematics he developed in 1999. Ira has authored two books on mathematics: Living with Math: Making Healthy Decisions for Yourself and the Earth and The Fraction ThinkBook with Gridmatics. Dr. Lou Schultz is a Faculty member in the Department of Mathematics at Southeastern Louisiana University. He has BS degrees in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Oklahoma State University, a BS in Mathematics Education and an MA in Special Education from Southeastern Louisiana University, and an Ed.S. and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Louisiana State University. He has taught for the past 38 years which includes 32 years as a teacher and 6 as an administrator. Dr. Schultz has been a consultant worked for over 100 school districts and involved in many professional development activities for teachers. He currently teaches number theory and Mathematical Reasoning to pre-service teachers. - Andrew Talmadge
Andy Talmadge has been a mathematics teacher for more than 25 years. He is interested in geometry and its application to problems in physics. More information about him can be found at his website.
